Guide to Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl.
For centuries Mother of Pearl has been a staple in jewellery. It's lustrous qualities caused it to be a much sought after material. Initially thought to have originated from only three areas, the India-Sri Lanka coastline, the Red Sea and Persian Gulf; it was soon discovered that pearl oyster beds could be found in most tropical waters.

Mother of Pearl has been used to accentuate architecture and buildings, ornaments, furniture, musical instruments, clothing and more. In recent years our most common use of Mother of Pearl is as part of jewellery. With it's iridescent appearance, array of hue possibilities and unique cuts, it is a immensely popular choice amongst ladies jewellery and gifts.
What is Mother of Pearl?
Mother of Pearl is a treasure of the ocean. As an organic gem, Mother of Pearl is crafted from Nacre, the protective substance that lines the inside of mollusc shells. This defensive coating protects the shell and pearl from parasites and other harmful substances.

Nacre is comprised of the same elements as the pearl itself. It's durability and versatility make it the perfect substance to be engineered and manipulated into whatever shape or application desired. As an exceptionally strong material, it has proved to not only be a beautiful addition to creations, but also long lasting.
Appearance of Mother of Pearl.
For hundreds of years we have worked with Nacre or Mother of Pearl. It can take on many appearances adding a unique factor to anything that it finds itself a part of. No two hues or cuts of the gem will ever be exactly the same.

The composition of the Nacre itself is what gives Mother of Pearl its iridescent quality. The natural structure of Nacre reflects light to create the multiple hues of colour we see from Mother of Pearl including rose pink, ivory, bronze, blue and more.
Compared to the pearl Nacre can be collected in much larger quantities, meaning that Mother of Pearl is a much more acquirable and affordable material. For this reason Mother of Pearl has become a much more common choice for jewellers and wearers alike. As previously discussed, Nacre is comprised of the same materials as the pearl itself, and with the added element of the iridescent look, it captured the eyes and hearts of the world.
Gifting Mother of Pearl.
Mother of Pearl is an inherently feminine material. Acquiring its name from the fact that Nacre protects the pearl throughout its creation, it is largely associated with motherhood and the divine feminine. It can also be linked to luxury and royalty, having been a desired material for centuries and used to creative decorative pieces and ornaments.

Gems are also commonly associated with qualities. Due to it's origin, Mother of Pearl is thought to be a protective substance for any wearer. It's versatility and durability is thought to convey strength and be soothing for both body and mind.

There is always a reason to give a gift containing Mother of Pearl, whether for sentimental reasoning for its undeniably elegant appearance, or for someone with a birthday in June as it is one of their birthstones. It would also be a perfect gift for a Mother or soon-to-be Mum with its connections to motherhood.
